ASTM A325 covers two different “types” of materials used to make bolts and fasteners. ASTM A325 Type 1 refers to bolts manufactured from medium carbon steel, boron steel, or medium carbon alloy steel; ASTM A325 Type 3 refers to bolts manufactured from weathering steel. (ASTM A325 Type 2 was removed from the standard in 1991.)
As of 2016, ASTM A325 has largely been replaced with the similar ASTM F3125.
What is ASTM A325?
ASTM A325 is a specification from ASTM International for heavy hex structural bolts, defining mechanical properties for bolts from 1/2” to 1-1/2” in diameter. The standard dictates that bolts must be tightened to at least 70% of their tensile yield strength.ASTM A325 covers two different “types” of materials used to make bolts and fasteners.
